A devastating and heartrending take on grizzly bear activist Timothy Treadwell, who became a kind of weird celebrity for living each summer on an Alaskan wildlife preservation with Grizzly bears, and who was subsequently killed by the grizzlies in 2003. Treadwell periodically journeyed to Alaska to study and live with the bears, along with girlfriend Amie Huguenard, across 13 summers before they met their demise at the hands of one of nature’s most dangerous hunters.
Veteran German director Herzog accesses more than 100 hours of footage filmed by the grizzly bear man himself as we learn about Treadwell’s possessive, ambitious, naive, dazed, and emotional outlook on the ways of the world. Sometimes the absurdities of this archive footage brings laughs, with Treadwell’s zany over-the-top asides to camera, but there is always a constant curiosity. Herzog narrates the story with his distinctive dry Germanic voiceover, as well as giving us majestic, spacious images of the Alaskan wilderness.
