Claude Cahun double-bill: LOVER OTHER / PLAYING A PART + Q&A

Director: LOVER OTHER (Barbara Hammer) / PLAYING A PART (Lizzie Thynne)
Year: 2006 / 2005
Duration: 55 min / 45 min
Country: USA / UK

Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore were the pseudonyms of two lesbian lovers who settled in Jersey in 1937. Posing as sisters, they had emerged from the Parisian art world of the early 20th century, collaborating on photos, sculptures and collages. While in Jersey throughout the Occupation they acted as propagandists against the Nazis, while also creating and defining the masculine-style lesbian image in their provocative photos.

New York-based Barbara Hammer defined lesbian filmmaking in the seventies with her experimental work that dealt with feminism and women’s issues, and in LOVER OTHER she brings a distinctive expanded documentary style to create a collage of her own.

Lizzie Thynne is Senior Lecturer in Media and Film Studies at the University of Sussex, but had previously made films for Channel 4’s 'Out' series, specifically looking at how personal narratives are connected to wider political, social and legal changes relating to the gay and lesbian world.

PLAYING A PART is part-documentary, part-reconstruction in collaboration with The Cholmondeleys, to illuminate the life of Claude Cahun.

WHY YOU MUST SEE THESE FILMS: These are the only two documentary films made about Cahun & Moore, so it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience to see them together and also to see both filmmakers on stage discussing this story of Jersey’s most famous daughters.
