changing the world we live in: BEYOND THE CALL / DISARM

Director: BEYOND THE CALL (Adrian Belic) / DISARM (Brian Liu & Mary Wareham)
Year: 2006 / 2005
Duration: 82 min / 67 min
Country: US

A double-bill of documentaries looking at war in the 21st century, and how some people are trying to make a change from the suffering that happens across the world.

Belic’s BEYOND THE CALL has been described as Indiana Jones meets Mother Theresa, as three eccentric older men travel the world delivering humanitarian aid directly into the hands of those that need it. They say "We're not there to change anybody's politics, we're not in the God business, and we pay our own way”, and their specialty is going to places where death from bullets and bombs is as frequent as death from hunger, disease, or the elements.

Liu and Wareham’s DISARM presents a provocative view of those challenging a mine-free world. With harrowing but important film footage from Burma to Iraq, from Bosnia to the warehouses of Soviet stockpiles of mines, this is a contemporary critical and intelligent investigation into 21st century war and its devastating consequences.

WHY YOU MUST SEE THESE FILMS: It’s easy to be complacent from the comfort of our homes but this double-bill of documentaries from the frontlines of the warzones of the 21st century is a wake up call to all.
