GREAT BRITISH DIRECTORS

Powell and Pressburger, David Lean and Alfred Hitchcock go head to head in our retrospective screenings in association with the Jersey Film Society and the Jersey Evening Post...

We hand-picked two classic films from each of these filmmaking giants, and we left it up to you the audience to vote for the films you want to see. The results are in and the winning films have been chosen...

BRIEF ENCOUNTER (David Lean, 1945)

The ultimate stiff-upper-lip weepie, with Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson desperately trying to maintain a very British decorum as they fall hopelessly in love. Complete with scenes filled with wafting engine steam, tearful cups of tea, the most romantic train station cafe in history and that soaring Rachmanninov score, it's a near-perfect classic and hugely deserves a viewing on the big screen. Bring your sweetheart, doomed love or otherwise.

DAVID LEAN (1908 – 1991)

David Lean was born in Croydon, Surrey, and started his film career working as an editor on newsreels before early collaborations with playwright Noel Coward. His later career saw him win numerous Academy Awards for his epic biopics and historical dramas.
